Where to find national funding opportunities
National support for women’s entrepreneurial activities are numerous. Entrepreneurs should be open for the opportunities available in their own countries.
Iceland has several funds where entrepreneurs have the opportunity to apply for funding. Some smaller funds are dedicated to women’s entrepreneurship activities, like among others, Atvinnumál kvenna and Svanni dept insurances.

Different types of funding, public vs. private
Funding of the enterprise activities can be very complex. The entrepreneur can look for funding among private persons or legal persons. She could also look for public funding, such as from research and innovation funds. Those funding opportunities are usually in competition between different entrepreneurs but also older companies conducting innovative activities. Here is a list of different sources of funds for the entrepreneur company:
- The founder does usually contribute with funds, according to her ability.
- The 3F’s: family, friends, and fools
- Business angels, usually invest in the enterprise
- Crowdfunding, rather new but important source of funding
- Subsidies of different kind, such as tax schemes
- Venture capital or private equity
- Debt financing for example a bank loan. Not recommended if the risk is high
- Factoring, that is to sell the invoice to finance company. Often to shorten the time it takes to get funding for the sale of the enterprise
- Leasing: instead of purchasing a machinery the entrepreneur can lease it.
- Suppliers can give the buyer extension to pay for the goods they sell
There are other means of funds and the entrepreneur is encouraged to look at any available sources of funding. She must consider the risk of the operation, and the ability to pay back. In case of application to public funding, the entrepreneur must do a lot of work – applications should always be filled out with great care, so that it becomes more likely to receive public funding.
